The Great Western Tattoo Show, Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th July 2025

The Background

Swindon is a central hub for tattooing in the south of the United Kingdom with its accessible location and over 20 active studios in the town.
Whilst tattooing has grown in the town, the local authority in Swindon has kept a tight rein on the regulations, making it difficult or almost impossible to allow guest artists to visit and a tattoo convention to take place.

Towards the end of 2021 we started to enquire with Swindon Borough Council about hosting a convention. Initially we were met with high prices and impossible hurdles to jump, but following months of discussion, our analysis of bylaws and regulations,  an agreement was made to hold a convention in 2023.

This was formalised at a Licensing Committee on the evening of December 6th 2022.

The Location

Swindon is an ideal location for a regional or national event and is often overlooked. It is in a key location between Bristol, London, Oxford and Reading with bus, rail and road links.
The M4 motorway runs through the borough and the bus and rail stations are within walking distance of the venue.

Swindon Town itself has a current estimated population of 225,000.

The Venue

Swindon has a number of things to be proud of but most noticeable is its industrial heritage from the great days of the railway – GWR.

We have chosen the GWR Steam Museum’s Great Western Hall as our venue, with the adjoining Hawksworth Hall as an entrance and market place.

The area has numerous facilities and is right next door to the huge McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Village. The hall is fully accessible and the convention is split over 3 levels with lift access.

The hall has plenty of space with planned layouts for up to 100 artists, 20 plus vendors, a bar, a rest area, coffee bar, two large screen projectors and a stage area.

The area outside the hall has space for numerous street food vendors. In 2024 a large marquee was added to link the two halls and increase useable space. The capacity for the venue will be in excess of 1000 people per day.

The Audience
According to statistics, the U.K is the most tattooed country in the world with over a quarter of the population having at least one tattoo and a third of 18 to 39 year olds being tattooed. By 2025 the U.K is heading towards its peak number of tattooed people as more and more people get inked every day.
Tattoos are not an essential item and can be expensive. Many collectors are committed to the process and everything associated with the lifestyle.
Ticket purchasers at the 2023 and 2024 came from a variety of ages and backgrounds. The majority came to the event having planned to spend significant sums. The footfall in 2023 was 1500 plus 250 artists, traders and team. This rose by almost 300 in 2024 and is expected to increase further in 2025.

The Vision
The Great Western Tattoo Show 2023 was a first of its kind for Swindon and Wiltshire. Convention style shows have been held in the U.K for decades, however in recent years, as tattooing has increased in popularity conventions have become more common place. Recent ‘new’ conventions in other towns and cities in England have been extremely successful and have proceeded to plan for a second year and beyond.
In 2023 we partnered with Old Eltons Clothing and Black Tears Rum. Having attended 2023 as a trader, Monsters Ink joined the sponsor line-up. The same happened with Underdog after attending as a trader in 2024. Unfortunately, due to restructuring issues, Black Tears left the partnership in mid 2024.
We have chosen a venue that fits with the history of Swindon, is aesthetically beautiful, is accessible to all, has plenty of parking and facilities.
In 2024 we discovered the ideal format and layout for the show. On the 5th anniversary of the show there are plans to take over the entire museum for one year, around all the steam train displays!
We have been hosting this event with the aim of bringing alternative arts to more people than before, not only with the amazing location but the great ticket prices.
